How to flex your emotional resilience

Life is nothing if not unpredictable, and those curveballs often seem to come out of nowhere.

This was certainly my experience when, within 24 hours, my family was struck with two separate, unprecedented and potentially insurmountable crises. It’s not a period I look back on fondly.

And yet, rather than crumble, I realised the only way that I could really support my loved ones the way I wanted to was to flex my emotional resiliency, and help them flex theirs. Together we could face adversity, and come through it – battle weary, perhaps, and certainly physically scarred for one of them – but through it nonetheless.

Emotional resiliency is the quality that enables us to adapt, persevere, roll with the punches and eventually bounce back when we face setbacks or obstacles. It’s a skill that can be learnt and improved, both a prevention and a cure for whatever life throws at us.
